Just go to the joymap options in the main menu to make your pad operable. You'll need to change/add keys for SM to recognize if you plan on using a dance pad. Playing Max 300 will probably be the last song you can AA on a foam pad. Something to keep in-mind is that (cheaper) foam pads slide around quite a bit. level of play, frequency of play, and price range. For anything other than USB, you'll need a converter hub. Pads consist of Foam, Plastic, Metal, and Acrylic/Metal (Like the DDR machines) with USB, PS2, XBOX, or GC connections.
